Grapheme [excerpt / stills] 35mm film transferred to digital/ Sound/ 2021. An epic rotoscope sing-along to study the Amharic alphabet (one of the Southern Semitic languages spoken in Ethiopia). The full script contains 33 characters, each one with seven forms of pronunciation determined by its shape. Each character, fidel, represents a consonant+vowel sequence, where the basic shape of each character is determined by the consonant and modified by the vowel. The minimal changes in the shape of the letter consequently changes its sound. This writing system is studied and memorized as a sing-along. Here, nature and surrounding life facilitate one set of characters morphing into the next.
